BIM MODELING

What is the difference between designing in BIM and modeling in BIM?

The BIM model is nothing more than a model + information. This is a digitization of the existing state.

Modeling of existing objects in BIM is a restoration work. Based on the obtained point cloud, we create a numerical model of the terrain or, the object. This is a modern inventory of larger objects in BIM.

With the help of laser scans, photogrammetry, drones we can quickly obtain a point cloud based on which we recreate the building and transform it into a 3D object in BIM. Based on the 3D model, we can further generate drawings (documentation for the contractor).

The inventory of existing objects is carried out for an object owner, an investor who is rebuilding or reviewing technical condition of the object.

The resulting BIM model can be subjected to structural calculations to see how the object is classified in terms of strength according to standards. It may be necessary to strengthen the structure.

The digital terrain model can be classified in terms of vegetation, raw material piles, embankments, excavations, land development. After calculations, we receive information about the area, the volume. We are able to determine how much material we need to supplement or how much humus should be removed.

When giving various examples of investments, it is worth referring to solar farms.By determining the energy demand of a building, we are able to calculate the number of required photovoltaic panels. We support photovoltaic farms with existing buildings by providing the roof surface.

The BIM model is nothing more than a model plus information. This is a digitization of the existing state.

So what are models, BIM families for manufacturers?

The BIM models for manufacturers are created 3D objects, families containing information regarding physical and chemical properties.

Where are BIM objects used?

The final BIM recipient is a client, an investor who buys products, devices. Earlier, however, an architect, a designer designs in BIM software using specific BIM objects from manufacturers. Thanks to this, at the design stage, apart from real dimensions, the object’s properties are known.

Therefore, these models allow producers to meet expectations of designers working in BIM and as consequence to increase their competitiveness before the actual tender process.

Objects, families – terminology depends on the used software. For example, while modeling objects in Revit we will use the name “Families”, where the final file has a dedicated * .rfa extension for objects, families.

BIM templates

Before starting the project, you should prepare a design template, a library of families and objects that will be used during the project. A well-prepared template or library allows you to start a project smoothly without discouragement during use of the software.

This discouragement is often the main argument refraining people to work within a BIM environment. An architect is there to design. The Creation of templates and libraries, which are friendlier to the experts in the IT industry, is burdensome. Our team meets design companies that want to only focus on designing, without spending extra time preparing IT related aspects. Write to us about this! 😉
